8 Surprising Health Facts About the Superfood Spinach

8 Surprising Health Facts About the Superfood Spinach | Fitness, Health, Running and Weight loss | Scoop.it
Full of nutrients and delicious taste, spinach is a winter superfood. But what’s the best way to eat it? Read the following surprising facts about this

Sandi Cornez's curator insight, August 22, 8:21 PM

Are you eating dark leafy green veggies, like spinach, Swiss chard, kale, beet greens, arugula?  These type of veggies consistently rank  tops for plant based foods. Spinach contains around 13 different flavonoids, substances that have strong anticancer effects.

Eating just a couple of 1/2-1 cup servings a week can slash your risk for macular degeneration by 50%. Spinach is also a great protector of your lungs and heart, builds strong bones, and cuts your risk of cancer.

Spinach, kale, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and green beans are also top omega 3 plant foods. In addition, spinach, asparagus, turnip greens, and romaine lettuce are rich in folate. Spinach contains  both magnesium and potassium, helping your heart, blood pressure. Cardiovascular function improves when you eat plant based foods.

Spinach, rich in antioxidants is also brain food as it protects against age-related problems of the central nervous system and brain.  Leafy green veggies, including spinach and cruciferous veggies provide a protective effect odor mental decline.

Spinach also helps with intestinal contractions and bowel regularity due to the magnesium content. Magnesium also contains compounds that encourage peristalsis, wavelike contractions that move waste products through your intestines.

Health tips:  Drink green smoothies and/or green juices as blending helps to break down particle size so you can better access all the minerals, vitamins, and plant nutrients. Not chewing well and digestive fluids don't allow for breaking open the soluble and insoluble fibers like cellulose and pectin which dark leafy greens contain. Blending greens,  veggies, fruits offers a smaller particle size than extensive chewing does.

You can also make what's known as a smoothie bowl and add other plant ingredients: seeds, nuts, raw carob/cacao, unsweetened coconut flakes or your fave add ins.

Your Ultimate Guide to Leafy Greens

Your Ultimate Guide to Leafy Greens | Fitness, Health, Running and Weight loss | Scoop.it

Once you experience all the different ways that greens can be delicious, no one will ever have to remind you to eat your greens again. There was a time when the only greens I ate were lettuce and even then, only iceberg and romaine. Later, I came to like spinach. To me, everything else looked like it was spewed out of a lawn mower. Boy, did that change. Today I eat all kinds of leafy greens; in fact, they happen to be my favorite veggies. Good for me because leafy greens are packed with vitamins A, B, C, E and K, minerals like magnesium, iron and calcium, and a bunch of flavonoids and phytochemicals. Greens benefit our health in so many ways including strengthening our immune system, cancer prevention, lowering cholesterol, and improved blood circulation. Find out about the 5 Health Ailments That Can be Treated by Eating More Greens.

Simple cooking methods flush arsenic out of rice ("more hot water washing can flush out arsenic")

Simple cooking methods flush arsenic out of rice ("more hot water washing can flush out arsenic") | Fitness, Health, Running and Weight loss | Scoop.it
Preparing rice in a coffee machine can halve levels of the naturally occurring substance.

Cooking rice by repeatedly flushing it through with fresh hot water can remove much of the grain’s stored arsenic, researchers have found — a tip that could lessen levels of the toxic substance in one of the world’s most popular foods.

Billions of people eat rice daily, but it contributes more arsenic to the human diet than any other food. Conventionally grown in flooded paddies, rice takes up more arsenic (which occurs naturally in water and soil as part of an inorganic compound) than do other grains. High levels of arsenic in food have been linked to different types of cancer, and other health problems.

Andrew Meharg, a plant and soil scientist at Queen’s University Belfast, UK, wondered whether cooking the grain in a different way might help to lessen the health risk. The standard method for making rice — boiling it in a pot until it soaks up all the liquid — binds into place any arsenic contained in the rice and the cooking water.

Meharg and colleagues found that using this method with increasing proportions of water removed progressively more arsenic — up to a 57% reduction with a ratio of 12 parts water to one part rice. That result confirmed that the arsenic is 'mobile' in liquid water, and thus can be removed.

Sandi Cornez's curator insight, August 23, 10:22 PM

Are you eating onions and garlic,  two real whole plant based foods that protect your body from disease and cancer.  Onions  support your immune system, provide protection from cancer, protect your cellular DNA. Garlic assists in control of blood pressure and cholesterol and helps detoxify your body from heavy metals; especially mercury and cadmium.  Garlic is a natural antibiotic that neutralizes bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Both alliums are rich in sulfur helping to reduce inflammation.

In addition, onions are rich in cysteine, an amino acid used by the body to manufacture Glutathione, the master antioxidant in your body that blocks free radical damage in the eyes. Research show that people who eat the most onions  enjoy longer and healthier lives.

Garlic helps to keep platelets from  clumping together and forming clots. People taking blood thinner drugs need to be aware of eating too much garlic.

Garlic increases the body's metabolic rate and makes losing weight easier. Fresh garlic contains high levels of anticancer compounds. The active healing ingredient, allicin, gives it a strong taste.

Health tips: If your eyes always cry when you're peeling/cutting onions, chill the onion in the freezer for about half an hour before slicing it. a cold onion won't release as many eye-burning sulfur compounds. Don't cut the root end because that's where many of the tear causing chemicals are located.

To get the full benefits of garlic, cut or mince a clove, then wait about ten minutes before cooking or eating raw. this gives the garlic time to release the anticancer chemicals. Eat a few whole cloves a week for maximum protection.

New Mark Twain Stories Discovered After 150 Years! - Writer's Circle | Fitness, Health, Running and Weight loss | Scoop.it

"Exciting news broke recently. Often times we discover unpublished stories from an author after they've died. We have examples of posthumous novels like The Garden of Eden by Ernest Hemingway and The Original Of Laura by Vladimir Nabokov that were unfinished before being published by their respective estates. But the scholars at UC Berkley have found pieces written by Mark Twain that are 150 years old. Not unfinished works, but published stories! Stories that are by no means "new" but new to us!..."

7 Ways to Rebalance Your Adrenal Glands at Every Meal

7 Ways to Rebalance Your Adrenal Glands at Every Meal | Fitness, Health, Running and Weight loss | Scoop.it
A diet high in stress-inducing chemicals and properties directly affects your adrenal glands and can disrupt your sleep, hormone function, and your weight and mood. Let’s take a look at seven things you can do right now to improve your meals to support your adrenals.

Via Sandi Cornez
Marty Roddy's insight:

Are your adrenal glands out of whack?  Emotional stress and toxic chemicals from the food you ingest can affect your adrenals and in turn cause you to experience sleepless nights, hormone imbalances, weight gain, and wild mood swings. Been there and it isn't pretty.

You now know that what you eat makes the difference in how your body feels and performs. Consuming real whole plant based foods and buying organic as much as possible provides your body with the needed vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients it requires on a daily basis to function optimally.

Health tips:  Do your best to reduce or eliminate processed refined food and sugar from your buying habits. Remember sugar is not your friend. Processed foods contain boatloads of toxic chemicals, GMOs, and are man made. These non foods are pro-inflammatory leading to chronic diseases like adrenal fatigue.

Top 15 Anti-Inflammatory Herbs For Aches and Pains - Healthy Holistic Living

Top 15 Anti-Inflammatory Herbs For Aches and Pains - Healthy Holistic Living | Fitness, Health, Running and Weight loss | Scoop.it
If you’re currently taking drugs for your inflammation, then you need to read this article. First things first – chronic inflammation doesn’t need to be your enemy. That is, as long as you know how to properly...

Via Sandi Cornez
more...
Sandi Cornez's curator insight, July 23, 9:48 PM

Did you know by making simple lifestyle changes you can reduce your risk of getting inflammation which causes chronic disease?  First on your list would be to consume real whole plant based foods and reduce or eliminate all processed food and sugar. Real whole plant based foods are the original anti-inflammatory foods your body craves. You'd be surprised how your body responds when you give it the nutrients it needs. And when your body feels better, so do you.

Health tips:  Did you know that processed foods are biologically dead? Is this what you really want to eat? Probably not. when you grocery shop, use your hands and nose to feel/smell food that's ripe (hint more nutrients). When you incorporate the highest quality of food, which means the greater nutritional value, you're sending your body a love letter.

Go to Farmer's Markets on the weekends or during the week, if possible. Most of these foods are picked by hand ensuring you get the best bang for your buck.  If you're buying non organic, look for "locally grown" or "sustainably grown".

In your community, shop at a local market, not a big supermarket. Three good reasons: 1.  the travel time it takes for food to be displayed in your store. The longer the food sits in the truck, the less nutritional quality.  2.  And when you buy in your community, your money stays there.  3. Shopping local lets you learn more about the farmers whose produce you're buying and you have more say about what you want to see on the shelves.

Consider a CFA (Community food Association) and/or grow your own food in your own container/yard or in a community garden where you can meet others and collaborate on what you grow. Growing foods acknowledges your interconnectedness with nature and lets your children see where food really comes from.
