TDF Comments: Mitt Romney delivered the commencement speech at Liberty Univeristy in Lynchburg, VA. While the university doesn't endorse candidates (or so it says) -- we must pause for a moment and consider that Romney's appearance is like an endorsement for the university and its principles. At this time we think voters should be reminded that Liberty University was founded by Jerry Falwell. As uncomfortable as they might be to read, here are just a few quotes from Falwell during his lifetime. 10. "The idea that religion and politics don't mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country." 9. "The ACLU is to Christians what the American Nazi party is to Jews." 8. "I hope I live to see the day when, as in the early days of our country, we won't have any public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them. Remember that story in the New Testament in which Jesus Christ fed thousands by multiplying a few loaves of bread and a couple of fish? Never happened. Christ lifted the hungry masses by urging them to fend for themselves. He then found a quiet corner, out of sight of the starving horde, to enjoy his fish sandwich. Mitt Romney wants voters to see him as the man to save the economy and right the country, the redeeming American hero riding in on the proverbial white horse. Just not that White Horse. As Mormon legend goes: After warning signs of trouble in the Middle East and anti-Mormon sentiment pervading the government, “You will see the Constitution of the United States almost destroyed. It will hang like a thread as fine as a silk fiber,” the prophecy has Smith saying. But “it will be preserved and saved by the efforts of the White Horse,” who will “stand by the Constitution of the United States as it was given by the inspiration of God.” There will be a Black Horse — American blacks, as the text is commonly interpreted — that sides with England and France, but eventually they’ll all submit to the White Horse as the religion fulfills its world-conquering destiny in an Armageddon-style war with the Russians—while keeping an eye on the looming threat of China. I have paid and will continue to pay any taxes due on everything I earned while a U.S. citizen. It is unfortunate that my personal choice has led to a public debate, based not on the facts, but entirely on speculation and misinformation." Bloomberg calculates that renouncing his citizenship in September 2011, as Saverin did, should save him about $67 million in income taxes versus renouncing his citizenship today, because his attorneys could argue that his Facebook stock was worth less then that it is now. Something terrible happened in Congress last week—and nobody seemed to notice. House Republicans voted to take money away from programs meant to help poor people and give it to the military instead. The problem is that the vote constitutes a collective Republican welching on the agreement that was reached last spring to raise the statutory debt ceiling and avoid national default. Yesterday’s vote doesn’t undo the deal or cause any immediate problems, but by so speedily backing out of their agreement, the Republicans have done something much worse—made it impossible for anyone to negotiate with them in the future, because it’s clear they cannot be trusted to keep the promises they made. As long as they can stir the pot with racially-oriented attacks on the president, Bachmann and others know they will never have to focus on real issues and solutions.
