I'm sure you can get a lot of stories to show progress in any year. But they won't include genetic code 2.0, artificial life, artificial blood, cyber war, the iPad, inhabitable exoplanets, an artificial intelligent mobile computing boom, and lots of other breakthroughs that we've been talking about for a long time. 2011 and beyond are going to be even crazier.

If anything, 2010 was the year when our reliance on web technology went through the roof. And as our usage went up, so did our expectations of uptime and reliability -- as evidenced by the near-panic that set in as these 10 services went (temporarily) down.
