The Classroom Is Dead — Bright — Medium

The Classroom Is Dead - Bright - Medium

For generations, thinkers have attempted to reimagine the classroom, to improve the classroom, and, of course, to disrupt the classroom, and where has all that gotten us?

The end of ‘just Google it’: Why students need to be digitally literate

The end of ‘just Google it’: Why students need to be digitally literate | Create: 2.0 Tools... and ESL | Scoop.it
With so much information readily available in a range of multimodal formats, from text to multimedia, apps and social networking, we need to blend technological learning and critical literacy together so that students can critically appraise the information that they are accessing. Teaching digital literacy is something that can be embedded into regular teaching in all subjects at all stages of education. To do that, it needs to be explicitly taught and reinforced by every teacher in every subject in a way that is appropriate for students.

Kelly Roach's curator insight, October 15, 2015 6:07 PM

A terrific article that explores why digital literacy skills are so essential. Not just device proficiency! Not just effective search skills! Our students need to think critically about what they view - this requires explicit teaching.

9 iPad Apps that Assess Student Learning

9 iPad Apps that Assess Student Learning | Create: 2.0 Tools... and ESL | Scoop.it

"As an iPad Lab teacher, I work closely with the classroom teachers to deepen and assess their students’ understanding of the material taught in the classroom—oftentimes, teachers ask that I spend additional time in the lab covering material that they’ve already taught.

The apps listed below are some of my favorite apps to use in these instances. Technology allows students opportunities to demonstrate and engage in learning in ways that go beyond using paper and pencil.

A tedious review session, suddenly becomes a something to look forward to. Completing a project that demonstrates the child’s knowledge about a topic becomes a task to be enjoyed and flaunted.

Use these apps to take your classroom learning environment and assessment to the next level."

Excited shouts of “left, left, left”, “knock down that tree” or “pick up that stone” can only mean one thing: your students have discovered the virtual world of Minecraft.

Since its launch in 2011, children and adults worldwide have spent hours creating unique environments. The video game generates a blank landscape of different terrains that players explore. They construct buildings, mine for useful materials and, depending on what mode you’re in, may have to defend yourself from attacks or stave off hunger

I have a great admiration for the thinking of Sir Ken Robinson... He speaks so eloquently and argues for creative learning...and so much more...

A stand out quote for me from this interview;

"What tends to dull the appetite [for learning] is being force fed things that people can't see an immediately relevance in or don't have an immediate interest in it...or where they are forced to learn in situations where they are inimitable... you know, 8 hours a day, sit still, do as you're told."

Bring on different ways of engaging with people around learning so that they not only 'get it' but they really enjoy it and become life long learners.

I recommend this 15 minute video to you!

The Ultimate Guide to Gamifying Your Classroom | Edudemic

The Ultimate Guide to Gamifying Your Classroom | Edudemic | Create: 2.0 Tools... and ESL | Scoop.it
Gamification is the process by which teachers use video game design principals in learning environments. The effects are increased student engagement, class wide enjoyment of academic lessons, and high levels of buy-in, even from your most reluctant learners.

When gamifying a classroom there are several things you’ll need to consider. The first is content, as in what are you trying to teach? Like any lesson or unit plan, you’ll need to figure out how to organize and assess new material. You’ll also need to consider your students. What kind of learners are they? What information do they already know? You’ll need to have a basic understanding of your students’ technology skills and how much support each student may need. You’ll want to consider putting together a training manual or some other support system for students who may need extra help. You’ll also need to consider your own comfort level with technology and the actual technology available to you. These considerations may lead you to designing your own game, or relying one a template or already built quest.

How flipped learning works in (and out of) the classroom

How flipped learning works in (and out of) the classroom | Create: 2.0 Tools... and ESL | Scoop.it

Flipped learning is more than just having students do homework during the school day. It’s more than just putting the onus on students to teach themselves. In fact, it’s neither of those things. Don’t be fooled by simple explanations of flipped classrooms that simplify a highly complex undertaking.
