The Technology is Brilliant but the Magic Happens When Teachers Learn to Let Go - TeacherswithApps

The Technology is Brilliant but the Magic Happens When Teachers Learn to Let Go - TeacherswithApps | Create: 2.0 Tools... and ESL | Scoop.it
The Technology is Brilliant but the Magic Happens When Teachers Learn to Let Go – I focus on the power of the iPad to increase students’ growth and development, self-reliance and independence, with a strong emphasis on study skills. Yes, content is a covered also, and I choose apps accordingly, yet always knowing that this powerful tool needs the guidance of an instructor who is willing to let go.  I wrote this blog quite awhile back, still seems relevant: I Know My Way Around an iPad. Here I discussed the distinction between knowing how to use an iPad and knowing how to teach lessons to a class of students with iPads in hand.

Actually teaching a class of students with iPads, is a very different scenario than any other tech integration. As comfortable as I am with technology, it is new territory teaching kids when they have the world at their fingertips and the majority of them are way more tech savvy than you or I will ever will be.

The basic cognitive skills needed by previous generations are no longer enough. Students in the conceptual age must also master the higher levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, including creation, metacognition and self-actualization.

“It will require an upgrade to our curriculum, new instructional methods and materials, a new profile of a global graduate and an open mind,” say Smith, Chavez and Seaman.

For ideas about how to re-create your classroom for the conceptual age, including potential classroom setups, blended learning models to mix and match, and a curriculum design process, take a look at the infographic
