Storybird: Providing a Tangible Outcome

Storybird: Providing a Tangible Outcome | Create: 2.0 Tools... and ESL | Scoop.it

My fondest memories of school are of the occasions on which I made stuff. When I think about what other aspects of my learning I enjoyed most, I always come back to the basic principle of creativity. Getting me involved in creative tasks that result in tangible outcomes was one of the ways my teachers ensured that I remained engaged and enjoyed the process of learning.

Sock Puppets

Sock Puppets is a highly engaging app that allows you to create your own stories with virtual sock puppets straight into your iPhone in a very easy and intuitive way.
Add Puppets, scenery, backgrounds and additional objects and start creating your story. The puppets automatically lip-synch to your voice when you touch the record button. Children can create stories and add the characters they prefer. Storytelling is probably the best way to foster writing and reading skills as well as literacy. While recording simply choose a puppet, tap it and that puppet will lip-synch, tap a different puppet and switch auto lip-synching to it. Stories can be as rich as the children’s imagination can reach. Backgrounds can be added to take puppets to different places within the story.
Children can later share their stories across the net, which makes it also highly rewarding.

Sock Puppets is free, although extra features need an upgrade (clips only last 30 sec, which could be enough for very short stories... longer stories need to be cut into different clips)

How Technology is Changing Students Study Habits

How Technology is Changing Students Study Habits | Create: 2.0 Tools... and ESL | Scoop.it

People in their 30s now are born before the technological revolution and have in a way or other learned how to use technology in their life and work. This category of people are called digital immigrants. If you are one of them then take a moment and think back to your university or college days when litttle or no technology was available.

FlashIssue

This might be a useful tool for learners to assemble their own portfolio of online work, or for presenting the results of a collaborative project.

FlashIssue is a web app which allows you to easily assemble a professional-looking newsletter, by bringing together your best content as well as any article available online.

FlashIssue can read your site RSS feed or for that matter any RSS feed you provide it with and you can pick and select from the stream of items in the feed the ones you want to include in your newsletter.

You can search for any topic via an integrated Google Search or provide the URL of a specific web page you want to integrate.

Once done, you can personalize the newsletter with your banner, text introduction and footer and then send it to all of your contacts in Gmail, or to your subscribers lists inside MailChimp, ConstantContact and other mail delivery services.

N.B.: A Google Chrome plugin also allows you to easily clip and grab any content directly from any web page and easily integrate it inside your curated newsletter.

How a Nobody can become a Somebody

How a Nobody can become a Somebody | Create: 2.0 Tools... and ESL | Scoop.it

This is a great post by Raymond Morin on how Social Influence and Curation are tightly interconnected. "The key to influence is based primarily on the quality and relevance of the content offered", he writes, "Only by adding value to the maelstrom of content on the Web can a blogger reveal themselves as an influence within their network".

And he finishes with a precious tip: "always ask whether our contents are worth sharing".

This is precisely one of the drivers we had for creating Scoop.it: creating Social Media for the rest of us. Not the celebrities or the movie stars (we like them too!) but the people who - in spite of not being famous - had expertise to share. Everyone has a favorite topic they care passionately about and that is worth sharing.

What is yours?
