Engagement is not a goal it's an outcome

Engagement is not a goal it's an outcome | Creative Tools... and ESL | Scoop.it

You often hear people talk about how technology is so “engaging” for kids. But that misses the point. It’s not the technology that’s engaging, it’s the opportunity to use technology to create something that is valued by the community and by yourself. Yes, a new device can be entertaining for a while, but when the novelty value wears off, what are you left with?

The power of noticing in second language acquisition

The power of noticing in second language acquisition | Creative Tools... and ESL | Scoop.it

Shona Whyte:

"What is attention, and what role does it play in foreign language learning? That’s the question that this little language note will explore," says Gavin, graduate students in a language-related field at the University of Hawai'i.

After reviewing some of the research on noticing in second language acquisition (Schmidt) and examining four key ideas, he concludes:

"Learning another language exercises our attention brain muscles. And learning to achieve a higher quality of attention in our daily life through daily language exercise can’t be a bad thing…right?"

Interesting for teachers as an argument to encourage language learners, but also for information about the key concept of noticing.

YouTube is packed full of educational stuff to share with students. It is usually our first choice when thinking about video resources online. Social games exploited in the English class

Social games exploited in the English class | Creative Tools... and ESL | Scoop.it

Facebook has been popularly used by teen learners , a situation that cannot be avoided , from which teachers should take advantage. Teachers ought to use Facebook to promote the practice of the target language outside the classroom. Teenagers are generally the most reluctant groups to work extra time on their English studies. There are different types of activities that can be set up within a facebook framework but social games have turned up to bridge that gap. I have done it and it worked!

Strategies for interacting with students

Strategies for interacting with students | Creative Tools... and ESL | Scoop.it

Shona Whyte:

Phil Chappell has distilled this list of do's and don'ts for teachers interested in promoting learner interaction in the language classroom from Mercer and Howe's (2012) paper in Learning, Culture and Social Interaction (as he says, "publicly available for now," the link is in his blog post):

- use some ‘open’ questions to explore students’ ideas
- encourage students to put knowledge into their own words (while also offering them new vocabulary to accommodate new ideas)
- press students to elaborate and justify their views, e.g. ‘How did you know that?’, ‘Why?’, ‘Can you say a bit more?’
- allow students extended turns to express their thoughts and reveal their misunderstandings
- hold back demonstrations or explanations until the ideas of some students have been heard (so that explanations can be linked to what has been said and to issues raised)
- give students enough time to construct thoughtful answers to questions, rather than moving quickly on if they are hesitant
- use whole class discussion to help students see the point and purpose of their study of a topic
- at least sometimes, allow students’ comments to shift the direction of a discussion (and even, perhaps, of a lesson!)
- ‘model’ ways of using language to conduct rational arguments, so that students can learn by example. (Mercer & Howe, 2012, pp. 17-18).

Phil Chappell has much more to say about this in his blog post, as well as other teaching and research references.

20 Must-See Facts About The 21st Century Classroom | Edudemic

20 Must-See Facts About The 21st Century Classroom | Edudemic | Creative Tools... and ESL | Scoop.it

The classroom of the future is on your doorstep. We’re getting slapped in the face with technology (sorry about that, partially my fault), flipped classroom models, and innovative ideas.

So what is the current state of the 21st century classroom? How many teachers have computers in their classroom? What are the 3 biggest reasons to use technology in your classroom? A new infographic from Open Colleges spells it out. We had the honor of helping them with this infographic so please spend at least half a second to check it out. Make me think that someone actually sees some of our hard work!
