Is modern technology creating a culture of distraction?

Is modern technology creating a culture of distraction? | Create: 2.0 Tools... and ESL | Scoop.it

Is there a need for moderation when it comes to phones or the internet or social media? Of course there is, and social norms are developing around those things, just as they developed around the horseless carriage and the telephone and plenty of other modern inventions. One of the devices that has historically drawn the most criticism from scholars and theologians for its corrupting effect on humanity seems to have worked out pretty well — it’s called the book.

Open Badges

Open Badges | Create: 2.0 Tools... and ESL | Scoop.it

What is a badge?

A badge is a symbol or indicator of an accomplishment, skill, quality or interest. Badges can be used to represent achievements, communicate successes, set goals, and motivate behaviors,. They can support learning that happens in new ways and new spaces beyond the traditional classroom. These include online courses, after-school programs, work and life experiences. By providing a more complete picture of learners' skills and competencies, badges can signal achievement to a variety of communities and institutions including educational organizations and social groups.

A Day In The Life - EFL CLASSROOM 2.0

A Day In The Life - EFL CLASSROOM 2.0 | Create: 2.0 Tools... and ESL | Scoop.it

Nice short (2min 45sec) video, no speech, showing one man going about his day.

David Deubelbeiss suggests using it for speaking/writing about daily routines: "Ask students to describe (as you play) or write (during / after) what this guy does in his day. Nice, real context for practicing speaking about routines."  But it could just as easily be using for describing what is happening at the present time, to practice present continuous or for fluency.

It's the Pedagogy, Stupid: Lessons from an iPad Lending Program

It's the Pedagogy, Stupid: Lessons from an iPad Lending Program | Create: 2.0 Tools... and ESL | Scoop.it

The truth is that the iPad is not destined to change the face of education. Nor is it just an expensive toy bought only by Apple fanboys, as some anti-Apple bloggers hyperbolize. It's a tool, like any other, and in the classroom it must always be thought of as being in the service of pedagogy. The pedagogical foundations must be solid, because the tool will achieve no heights the underlying pedagogy will not support.

Welcome to Lit2Go ETC

Welcome to Lit2Go ETC | Create: 2.0 Tools... and ESL | Scoop.it

"Lit2Go is a free online collection of stories and poems in Mp3 (audiobook) format. An abstract, citation, playing time, and word count are given for each of the passages. Many of the passages also have a related reading strategy identified. Each reading passage can also be downloaded as a PDF and printed for use as a read-along or as supplemental reading material for your classroom."

Mostly American out-of-copyright classics aimed at native-speakers, but well put together for teachers (transcript, reading level, word count) so usable for intermediate-plus teen or adult learners.

Storybricks

Storybricks | Create: 2.0 Tools... and ESL | Scoop.it

This application weaves stories in a very enticing way. Students decide about characters, their relationships and the plot of the story by connecting elements out of a library of emotions, actions, movements... Great way to enhance storytelling, creativity and communication.

Storybricks is still in alpha so there are plenty of glitches in it. When those glitches are gone using Storybricks be a great way for students to get engaged in crafting narratives that they can see played out before them.
