Mother shot on the road to safety, victim of Central African Republic violence

Mother shot on the road to safety, victim of Central African Republic violence | 1st | Scoop.it
Read the first-hand account of an ambush on a convoy carrying people fleeing violence between Muslims and Christians in the Central African Republic.
Gari Ramirez's insight:

Its passengers, many carrying amulets intended to protect the wearer from danger, perched atop piles of mats, sacks and pieces of wood, the sides of the truck festooned with brightly colored water containers.

The long line of trucks was headed up north, snaking its way 375 miles across the country on a hard, dangerous journey from the tropical Central African forest to the open savannah bordering Chad.

The journey was not made by choice. Bitter fighting between Muslim and Christian militia groups since a coup last year has claimed many lives and displaced hundreds of thousands of people.

But after four months trapped in a 500-meter stretch of road by a mosque in Bangui, under threat from the militia groups roaming nearby, it offered these families a chance at freedom from what had become an open-air prison.

Riding on the truck with them promised to give a close-up view of the dangers they faced en route.

14 killed in sinking of migrants' ship off Italy

14 killed in sinking of migrants' ship off Italy | 1st | Scoop.it
At least 14 people were killed when a ship carrying migrants sank about 100 miles off southern Italy Monday, the Italian navy said.
Gari Ramirez's insight:

The deaths of more than 300 African migrants in a shipwreck off Lampedusa last October shocked Italy and the world, and led to calls for EU lawmakers to review their migration policies.

A rescue operation established by the Italian government after that tragedy saved more than 20,000 people at sea through early April, the United Nations' refugee agency said. Nearly 43,000 migrants arrived in Italy by sea in 2013, according to the agency.

Many of the migrants are from African nations, while others have fled war-torn Syria.

Man arrested on drug allegations after traffic stop

Man arrested on drug allegations after traffic stop | 1st | Scoop.it
A vehicle stop Saturday afternoon ended with the driver’s arrest on suspicion of methamphetamine possession, according to authorities.
Gari Ramirez's insight:

At 2:40 p.m., an American Canyon police officer stopped a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pickup at Echo Summit Road and Mini Drive in Vallejo, just south of American Canyon, according to Napa County sheriff’s Sgt. Jon Crawford. The truck had only a paper license plate, and when the officer asked the driver, 20-year-old Edgardo Reynoso of Vallejo, to switch the engine off, he did so with an awl instead of a key, Crawford said.

The officer then searched the vehicle and found 5.2 grams of suspected methamphetamine, some of it in a shoe box that also contained a glass smoking pipe, according to Crawford.

Reynoso was detained on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, then was booked into the Napa County jail.

The pickup, which had been reported stolen, was returned to Reynoso’s father, according to police. No allegations linked to the vehicle were listed in jail records.

Texas police officer defends shooting a 93-year-old woman

Texas police officer defends shooting a 93-year-old woman | 1st | Scoop.it
A cop who fatally shot a 93-year-old woman at her home in Texas is defending his use of deadly force and lashing out at the City Council that fired him.
Gari Ramirez's insight:

"The knee-jerk reaction to terminate Mr. Stem was not about whether Ms. Golden chose to create and perpetuate a life-threatening situation. That is a clear and indisputable fact.

"Rather, the city's decision was about appeasing certain members of the community who want to make this case about Ms. Golden's age, the fact she is African-American, or the fact she is a woman.

"None of those factors played a role in Stem's decision to use deadly force," Robert McCabe, Stem's attorney, said in a statement Sunday.

His comments come as Texas Rangers continue an investigation into why Pearlie Golden, a longtime resident in this small town of about 4,600 people between Dallas and Houston, was shot multiple times at her home Tuesday.

Ghost-hunting in Amador County

Ghost-hunting in Amador County | 1st | Scoop.it

Gari Ramirez's insight:

At the National Hotel in Jackson, guests are offered a ghost-hunting kit to conduct explorations of the supernatural forces said to haunt the building. The kit includes devices that measure electronic voice phenomena and electromagnetic fields and a pen thermometer that measures temperature. (Ghosts tend to like things chilly.)

The National Hotel opened in 1863 after the original hotel on the site burned. After a long decline, it closed in 2009. Sacramento businessman Stanley Lukowicz bought it and spent $4.5 million transforming it into a luxury boutique hotel, which opened in August 2012.

Apparently the ghosts from the Gold Rush era never checked out. “Stuff happens here all the time,” said Noah Stevens, front desk manager. One shaken guest told Stevens he had seen the shadow of a woman hovering over his sleeping wife. “This was a young couple, here for a wedding, not at all interested in ghosts,” Stevens recalled.
