tanik dandridge's insight:

Many families who were not as fortunate as the ones who had cars were forced to stay behind or hitchhike. Hitchhiking became very popular and known as the new way to get around. Hitchhiking even got the attention of hollywood films and films like Sullivan's travel were inspired by hitchhiking. When the depression hit hitchhiking exploded. In this time period a writer estimated that atleast every man has atleast hitchhiked before. A Transient Bureau was set up to help hobbos and hitchhikers get around.

Historical Fiction letter

1930

tanik dandridge's insight:

Dear Mary and Louis i have not seen or heard from you in a while i wounder how you two are doing? I am writing the both of you to tell you how i been and the many things that are going on today. I decided to cut my dreams of being a actress and moved with my wife and three kids to oklahoma. Its very quite and peaceful here and the kids love it. Its so diferent to all of us to move from a big city to here. I also decided to become a farmer and grow our food naturally. But a few weeks ago something very terrible happened. While joseph,Leanne and Christopher were outside playing a huge huge gulf of dust so big that it completely covered up the whole town.It was something that i never seen before in my life i was so terrified i ran outside got the kids and went inthe house. The storm past quickly and later that day i went outside to check and see if everything was ok and what had happened. It was horrible the whole town was destoyed all my crops were dead including all my animals. I could'nt believe my eyes i thought to myself that me and the family had to leave and start all over again. The next morning me, my wife and the kids started to pack our bags and leave. Word around is that califonia has many good aviaable jobs need to be filled so we decided to go there and try our luck. As we were on the road leaving i seen many families and couples on the side of the road hitchhiking their way to california it saddens me to see so many people having no where to go and leaving their old hometowns that no longer exist. When we got to California we had no where to go we slept out of our car for almost three weeks and barley had any food to eat. Everyday i went out and looked for a job as i did so i realized that many peope called me an okie and all the rest of the people from oklahoma. They called us that because we were from oklahoma and they didnt like us all coming to their state trying to find jobs and places to live. I have been here for a year now and both good and bad things have happened to me. When i found a job and a place to stay i later opened up my own bank account and it did me good for a while a had a place where i knew my money was going so i could keep it safe and at the same time earn intrest.Later in the year of 1929 October 29th all my hard work went down the drain. The stock markets crashed and left thousands of people broke and homeless many became hobos. Also living conditions got so hard for many families that some parents were kicking their kids out and forcing them to get a jobs starting at the age of eleven or twelve. Since i came down here i have met me a couple of friends one of my friends is a black man named Neiko Williams he was born and raised in New York but later moved to California. He tells me that most blacks were the first to be laid off their jobs and suffered from unemployment. Some organizations he said even excluded them fro their soup kitchens. Many black voters drifted to the Democratic party, and in the presidential election they voted in large numbers for the democratic for the first time. One night i went to a bar with my friend Neiko Williams the music they played was so soothing and so fun to dance to. They called it jazz music Neiko told me that only blacks created and listened to this type of music but i fell in love with it the first time i heard it. He also told me that jazz came out in the 1920's but now since the 1930's jazz has grew and spread into all other genres of musicas well. Many crimes also had happened lately i hear about one with a women named bonnie and a man named clyde that their a couple and mostly what they were doing was kidnapping policeman and releasing them far far away from where they were needed to be but they were unharmed and also killing people who got in their way. Many film lengths were produced during this time many of my favorite films are Modern Time, Gone with the wind, Wizard of oz and Muting on the Bount. Living here in California for a year i have also grown to know and have many hispanic friends. During this great depression racial tentions ran high mexicans in california and other states were seen as competition for already scare jobs. My friend has told me that one big problem for mexican americans is also trying to bring their families over to the united states so they can have atleast a better life here than in mexico because even though many of the families are unemployed he tells me life here is still better than in mexico. Many food prices are very low but for my family and many more its still hard i must admit that in order to have food we must pick and choose wisley what we get sometimess if we are ever lucky we can buy a little more than what we usually can afford. I hope by now you heard of The hoover dam project it was built in Clark County Nevada/ Mohave County, Arizona,US. The purpose for it being build was for power, flood control, water storage, regulation, recreation. They started building it in 1931, the cost for the whole project was $49 million($821 million with inflation) The united states government own's it. But i love it here hope one day you guy's can come visit me

tanik dandridge's insight:

The dust bowl is a region in the USA which includes the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and the Dakotas. The name Dust Bowl comes from events that took place during the depression in the 1930s.

A severe storm combined with poor farming techniques lead to soil erosion. Soil erosion causes soil particles to be removed which were then picked up by the wind and accumulated into huge dust clouds. So manly the dust bowl got its name because the huge storm was nothing but dust. The dust bowl was really made a huge part of history and still until this day we have not had anything like it.

1930's

tanik dandridge's insight:

Many dust bowls caused farmers to move away and start farming some were eles.Because the dust bowls destroyed their farms and they were unable to grow crops. Many farm numbers were decresed also because of the storm. Also the farmers who had a few crops left they were eaten by many rabbits which came down from the moutains. Due to farmers also not having food  sometimes they were forced to hunt and kill thr rabbits. Many people also died by the dust storms because they were breathing in dust that can clog your lungs. People say the causes of the dust bowls were the lack of plant life.
