When kids read digital books with recoded narration and highlighted words, they gaze at words longer and proceed more slowly than when a caregiver reads to them.

I think it's great that kids will concentrate more on the words when highlighted and read to via the recording. Nice for their enhanced learning. But I would definitely like to see this approach balanced with direct parent/child reading. There is significant bonding that can take place that is just as important, if not more so, than the learning that occurs.
