Charles Tiayon's curator insight, July 29, 2:20 AM

One of things that writers love to complain about is not getting enough attention for their manuscript from their editor. What is reasonable to expect in terms of editing? "The acquisitions editor will not line-edit your entire manuscript," Elizabeth said. "There just isn’t time—especially not when every publisher is trying to publish more books on faster schedules than they were 10 years ago. But she will work with you on its organization, length, clarity, and focus. She will tell you when you’ve buried a great story that could introduce a chapter, or when you’ve strayed off your main topic into a swamp of side issues. She will understand enough of what you are trying to do to choose reviewers who can give both you and the publisher useful feedback, and help you figure out how to handle the feedback when you get it."

Frederick Gale Ruffner Jr., an inveterate collector of information who founded Gale Research, an empire of directories, dictionaries, biographies and bibliographies that stocked reference libraries for decades, died on Aug. 12 at a hospital in Detroit. He was 88.

He founded his company in Detroit in 1954. Working alongside his wife on a card table in their home, Ruffner typed and edited the first edition of the volume now known as the Encyclopedia of Associations, which proved highly useful for professionals across industries.

Hundreds of other titles followed. Gale Research became particularly known for its series of literary reference guides, including theDictionary of Literary Biography.

Three Common Mistakes to Avoid When Publishing a Book App | Digital Book World

In May, I wrote a post called “Five Myths About Book Apps,” where I shared the most common myths my colleagues at the Book App Alliance and I have heard about publishing books as apps.

Now I want to discuss the three biggest mistakes people make when it comes to tackling this kind of project. I’ve helped scores of people publish their books as book apps, and I’ve seen these mistakes made over and over. They’re easy to avoid if you’re aware of them.

THE COSTLY BUSINESS OF PHOTO BOOK PUBLISHING

THE COSTLY BUSINESS OF PHOTO BOOK PUBLISHING | 102nd Place | Scoop.it

The challenges of photography book publishing are well known. Print runs are low, production costs are high, and bookstores and online retailers are pressing for discounts. The rule of thumb in the book industry is that the cost of producing the book equals 20 percent of the retail price. Depending on the number of images to be reproduced, paper stock and size, type of binding, and other factors that raise the cost of production, the publisher can either charge a prohibitively high price for the book, or find another way to defray its costs.
