Teachers Texting Students: Should Schools Ban Or Encourage?

Teachers Texting Students: Should Schools Ban Or Encourage? | Silvana Richardson | Scoop.it
Texting is the communication mode with which young people are most comfortable: The Pew Research Center recently found that teens exchange 60 texts a day, a hike from 50 a day in 2009. And a suicide hotline in Minnesota set up a texting option in January, resulting in the receipt of more text messages in one day than phone calls in an entire month.

This looks like a really nice tool to get students creating presentations and using their own voice to narrate. Great way to get students speaking.

Rolf tynan's curator insight, February 3, 12:55 AM

We should be effecting changes in academic perceptions of the learning process, embracing a new reality of learning controlled and owned by individual learners who are using multiple devices; the trend towards universal ownership of these devices and an expectation that these technologies will be recognised as part of the fabric of education (formal and informal study) is unmistakably there.

Immigrants Do Want to Learn English: Where Is The Funding?

Immigrants Do Want to Learn English: Where Is The Funding? | Silvana Richardson | Scoop.it
What occurs to me is that in all the rhetoric, Sajid Javid has forgotten something very simple. Where is the government funding and access for keen families and individuals to learn English if they should wish it? While the will may be there from immigrant families, the financial ability to attend classes may not be.
Silvana Richardson's insight:

The author makes a very valid point about funding for ESOL classes.

Dyslexia for Teachers of EFL

Dyslexia for Teachers of EFL | Silvana Richardson | Scoop.it

Foreign language teachers often lack sufficient understanding of the nature of dyslexia and the difficulties it causes in foreign language learning and are not familiar with the relevant teaching techniques and methods to further the language learning processes of dyslexic students. Therefore the preparation of teacher training materials for this target group of language learners is both timely and highly needed.

Evaluation of Evidence-Based Practices in Online Learning

A recent 93-page report on online education, conducted by SRI International for the Department of Education, has a starchy academic title, but a most intriguing conclusion: “On average, students in online learning conditions performed better than those receiving face-to-face instruction.”

robyns tut's curator insight, November 26, 2013 5:45 AM

I understand that this may be an average, however I hope that it is kept in mund that this is not true for many students. I for one have to print out my online notes in order to use them to the best of my ability. Also, even if this is true, I believe that face- to - interaction is being lost in this technological age. but it is still as important as it has always been and that needs to be remembered - Justine Pearce
