I read a great article the other day on iPads in the classroom, over at iSource. The title, as mentioned above is ‘10 Reasons the iPad is an awesome tool for classrooms and education’. It’s written by a guy who would know, Brad Gurgel, since he serves as a principal and teacher at a school that has adopted iPads on a 1:1 device to student ratio.

Some of you may remember Brad did one of our What’s on Your iPad posts with me last year.

I won’t give away too much of Brad’s Top 10, but I will share my favorite reason on his list:

Cyndi Danner-Kuhn's insight:

Digital bookmarking  is a pivotal learning skill. It does not only allow you to organize your information into one single platform accessible from anywhere with an internet connection but can also help you in your professional growth. Web2.0 technologies have made it way easier for us to control and curate the content we come across online. I definitely believe that without the power of bookmarking we would never be able to manage the huge influx of information Internet provides. I have already talked in a previous post about the benefits of bookmarking for us as teachers and learner and I said that bookmarking web tools:

Free Technology for Teachers: Blubbr - Create Interactive Quizzes Using YouTube Clips | Technology in the Classroom; 1:1 Laptops & iPads & MORE | Scoop.it
Cyndi Danner-Kuhn's insight:

Blubbr is a neat quiz creation service that I recently learned about on Danny Nicholson's blog. Using Blubbr you can create interactive quizzes that are based on YouTube clips. Your quizzes can be about anything of your choosing. The structure of the quizzes has a viewer watch a short clip then answer a multiple choice question about the clip. Viewers know right away if they chose the correct answer or not.

This would really work great for a flipped classroom if youa re using videos. When the students come into class, they can do a quick self marking quiz.

ContentsMobile Apps & Curriculum for Your ClassCreating Narrated SlideShows and ScreencastsMeet Wolfram Alpha: Your New Best Math FriendIntroduction to ScratchGetting Started with Interactive Digital Writing

Today I shared five different presentations for teachers in Yukon Public Schools in the district’s annual professional development conference. I recorded audio for each session and published them to my secondary podcast channel, “Fuel for Educational Change Agents.” Here are the session titles, descriptions, resource links, and podcast audio links. Of these five sessions, the only “brand new one” (which I’d never presented before) was the third session on Wolfram Alpha. If you’re just going to listen to one of these, that’s the one I’d recommend! Wolfram Alpha is MINDBLOWINGLY powerful and amazing. As co-founder Theodore Gray said in October at the Educause Conference in Denver, Wolfram Alpha has the potential to fundamentally change our relationship to computation and mathematics in the same way Google has (and continues to) change our relationship with information access.

Very interesting, especially the sophisticated Wolfram Alpha.  These tools will continue to evolve and change very rapidly which is why it's so important to teach children HOW to learn rather than WHAT to learn.

7 Outstanding Free Books for your iPad ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

7 Outstanding Free Books for your iPad ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Technology in the Classroom; 1:1 Laptops & iPads & MORE | Scoop.it
Cyndi Danner-Kuhn's insight:

Below is a list of some excellent books for your iPad. I have curated this list over  the last couple of months and I kept adding to it every time I stumble upon a resource somewhere online.I don't know if you like reading books on your iPad or not but let me tell you this: having at least a couple of titles installed on your iPad would really be of great help particularly in those moments when you are stuck somewhere and have nothing to do but waiting. Reading is a habit ( luckily a good one ) that we can ACQUIRE  by force of habituation at least in the eyes of Skinnerian theory. The more you read , the fluent you get at reading and the more used your mind becomes to the act of reading.

Check out these books I selected for you. All of them are free and require iBooks. Enjoy

Instagram has updated its terms of service, and many Instagram users are not happy about what they've read. If you'd like to jump off the Instagram bandwagon, check out these photo-sharing alternatives.
Cyndi Danner-Kuhn's insight:

Instagram updated its privacy policy and terms of service on Monday, which sent many users running for the exits. A change to the photo service’s legal jargon makes it clear that Instagram can take users’ photos and use them in advertising campaigns with the company’s ad partners.

It’s exactly the sort of thing many users feared might happen in the wake of Instagram’s purchase by Facebook earlier this year. After all, Facebook’s Sponsored Posts already feature user content.

The 20+ Apps To Know About In 2013 - Edudemic | Technology in the Classroom; 1:1 Laptops & iPads & MORE | Scoop.it
What are the biggest apps to know about in the upcoming year? Our friends at Education Dive have assembled a useful list!
Cyndi Danner-Kuhn's insight:

Education got a lot more mobile in 2012 as in-school iPad initiatives, the iPhone 5 launch and online learning providers in general made classroom experiences more interesting—and don’t expect to see teaching head back to desktop PC’s in 2013. In fact, as MOOCs and hybrid programs continue to evolve, mobile should have an ever more significant role to play. Looking back at some of 2012′s most significant app launches and updates,
