10 Tools for Increasing Engagement in Online Courses

10 Tools for Increasing Engagement in Online Courses | Technology in the Classroom; 1:1 Laptops & iPads & MORE | Scoop.it

Over the last few years I've done a lot of work developing writing and redeveloping online courses and course materials. In the initial rush to get learning online many organisations got themselves a Moodle platform and then attached a whole load of PDFs and .docs, added some forums and the odd video clip and called it an online course. It's no surprise then that drop out rates for online learning courses have been so high.

The advent of Web 2.0 though, brought a whole bunch of new tools that course designers could take advantage of to make content more social, interactive and engaging.

Here are some of the tools I've been using recently to embed a bit more interactivity into the courses I work on.

Engaging students is challenging. Using technology assists in learning.

i found this link very interesting since online courses can be so dry and drab. I have taken an online course before and wanted to know how to increase my own engagement let alone other students.

App-for-All: Should Every School Build Its Own Mobile App? | Technology in the Classroom; 1:1 Laptops & iPads & MORE | Scoop.it
SchoolInfoApp helps schools embrace a mobile-first strategy with its custom mobile apps.

Principal: Every school will soon have a mobile application
Stenette Byrd, principal of Smithfield High School in Smithfield, Va., predicts that every school will have its own mobile application in the next few years. Byrd's school launched its own app, using SchoolInfoApp, at the start of the 2012-13 school year. The application saved the school $2,000 in printing costs by offering its student handbook digitally, and the program also helps the school raise money through in-app sponsors, Byrd reports. Video - How to Use the New Features of Socrative

On Thursday I wrote a post highlighting the new features of Socrative. Over the last eighteen hours I received a few questions about how to use the new features so I sat down and put together a short screencast demonstrating how to add pictures to Socrative quizzes and how to set up a quiz for self-grading. The video is embedded below.

Hopscotch HD

Get Hopscotch HD on the App Store. See screenshots and ratings, and read customer reviews.

Hopscotch allows kids to create their own games and animations. Kids unleash their creativity with this beautiful, easy-to-use visual programming language.

Inspired by MIT's Scratch, the Hopscotch programming language works by dragging and dropping method blocks into scripts. When you're done with a script, press play to see your code in action! As you get more advanced, you can add more objects and use custom events, such as shaking and tilting the iPad, to run your code.

Why coding? By the year 2020, there will be a projected 1.4 million computer jobs but only 400,000 CS students. Computer Science is among the highest paid college degrees and programming jobs are growing at 2x the national average.

Many of the best coders fell in love with programming as kids at the age of 8, 10 and 12 years old. With Hopscotch, kids can build and perfect their own creations while while obtaining an understanding of the fundamentals of computer science.

A Guide for Administrators

A Guide for Administrators | Technology in the Classroom; 1:1 Laptops & iPads & MORE | Scoop.it

“A Guide for Administrators” is the newest resource from CoSN’s Leadership for Mobile Learning initiative.

In the face of the "new normal" of decreased budgets and increased expectations,

many administrators are turning to technology to enhance teaching and learning while mitigating the consequences of consecutive years of budget cuts. Mobile learning, in particular, has attracted a great deal of attention for its potential to engage students by leveraging the technology environment they have grown accustomed to in their non-school lives; its potential to scale personalized learning and reduce the digital divide; its potential to extend learning beyond the four walls of the classroom and the limited hours of the school day; and its potential to enable new pedagogies based on the affordances of these devices that students already carry at their fingertips.Still, the field of mobile learning is still emerging and there are many questions to be addressed when contemplating a mobile learning implementation.

How do we create a program with a sustainable impact on teaching and learning, rather than a superficial adoption of the currently "hot" technology? What are the steps involved in implementing a mobile learning program? How do we optimize the investment of our technology dollars? How do we choose devices, networks, and software for our implementation? What are the security considerations in implementing a mobile learning program? What are the policy considerations for a mobile learning program? What are the professional development considerations? What are the teaching models associated with mobile learning? What are the options for funding a mobile learning program?

Disgusting. Via the Washington Post So many things going wrong. "Talk about corporate-based school reform. New high-stakes standardized tests aligned with the Common Core State Standards are featuring plugs for commercial products. And the companies didn’t have to pay a penny. Yes, New York state students who this past week took Pearson-designed exams were just treated to plugs for LEGO, Mug Root Beer and more products from at least half a dozen companies, according to  the New York Post."

High school student Jack Hostager says: was indisputably the best learning experience I have ever had. I learned more than I could have ever

High school student Jack Hostager says:

[My participation in the Coastal America Student Summit on the Oceans and Coasts] was indisputably the best learning experience I have ever had. I learned more than I could have ever learned in a classroom about how the planet works, ways in which humans depend on and impact the ocean, and efforts being undertaken to conserve them. Equally important, I discovered how to work well with others, connect with people, be persuasive, speak in front of an audience, answer questions under pressure, juggle competing priorities, and follow through with a project.

These all sound like skills that every student should have. Yet because I didn’t practice them in a classroom, I was punished by education’s systems of grading for this. When I got back to school, my grades had dropped (some considerably) since I missed a few assignments and a test. It was as if the whole experience meant nothing because I learned the wrong thing. But it would have been irrelevant even if it directly related to what I was studying because I still would have had to make up the work, listen to a lecture, and eventually take a test.

After returning inspired and ready to change the world only to be thrust back into the invariable cycle of desks, worksheets, textbooks, and lockers, education’s expectation for me hit me painfully hard. I realized that.......

We're Writing a Book! (pt. 1)

This post isn't so much an "Evernote" post, but a "teaching" post. I'll soon be starting a personal blog for posts like this and other educational happenings. Sorry if you're looking for a cool Eve...

A few days ago I downloaded May We Suggest?– a free iBook written by a 9th grade English class– and I was blown away and truly inspired. My students were inspired as well. Jon Smith (@theipodteacher) has been helping students create and publish books and you can see all of the available books on his blog.

A few days after downloading the book, I Facetimed (that’s a verb now, right?) with Mr. Smith and asked a million questions because I want to challenge my 8th graders to create and publish a book. Jon was very helpful and really passed his enthusiasm on to me. He helped explain the whole process and recommended we use Book Creator to create our multimedia presentations (video, audio, text, images, etc.) with the intent of making our books available through iBooks.
