Driving Question to Facilitate Student Inquiry and Common Core

Driving Question to Facilitate Student Inquiry and Common Core | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
From 21centuryedtech.wordpress.com - June 18, 10:04 PM

"I really like Driving Questions. In fact, I like them so much more then Essential Questions. You might ask why? I think it just might be my affection for the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy. You may remember that in the revision the different levels were changed into action."

Beth Dichter's insight:

In this post Gorman explains why he likes driving questions and how they differ from essential questions. He states "they allow students to work together in the amazing process of divergent thinking."

Gorman also notes that it is difficult to create good driving questions (and one might say the same can be true with essential questions). The image above looks at questions asked in "educationese" and how one might translate that to a driving question.

In addition he provides links to quite a few resources that include:

* A resource that looks at concepts of the driving question

* A variety of resources on Project Based Learning, including how to craft a driving question (which also includes a video)

* Practice with driving questions

Newsela - Build Reading Comprehension with News

Newsela - Build Reading Comprehension with News | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
From newsela.com - June 18, 8:06 PM

Read closely. Think critically. Be worldly.

Beth Dichter's insight:

Newsela is a free website that provides news for students. It is geared to students in grades 4 - 12 and will help students build close reading and critical thinking skills in non-fiction reading comprehension.
Articles are written at multiple levels of compexity. It appears that the levels begin around 690 and go up to just over 1200.

Each article has a quiz (aligned to Common Core) allowing you to quickly see if your students are on track.

And last there are great teacher tools. You may assign articles, review student quizzes and track Common Core mastery.

Game-Based Learning Is Probably Worth Looking Into

Marc E. Moglen's comment, Today, 8:58 AM
At first, I did not like this article's title, but now I find it appropriate. It seems as if it is still not clear what the practical effects of digital games in the learning environment will be (I say "will" as it seems inevitable). Justin Boyle does mention a study that showed (in the case of University students) that "despite the better written and group assignment performance of the traditionally educated subjects, the game-enhanced students completed the course with better average scores overall". This is a concerning finding as it suggests that games may be readily adopted if it is shown that they can increase student performance (e.g. grades), yet the fact that games may lower actual facets of educational progress (e.g. group work) will probably be swept under the carpet.

Alternatives To Homework: A Chart For Teachers

Alternatives To Homework: A Chart For Teachers | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
From www.teachthought.com - June 17, 10:50 PM
Beth Dichter's insight:

What if instead of giving homework to our students we asked them to come up with ideas? This chart provides a variety of alternative ways to look at homework. The post describes this as "Rather than simply a list of alternatives to homework, it instead contextualizes the need for work at home (or, “homework”). It does this by taking typical classroom situations–the introduction of new material, demonstrating a procedure, etc.), and offering alternatives to traditional homework assignments."

Consider asking your students what they would suggest doing instead of homework. What might you be able to add to these suggestions?

A new report released today reveals the results attempting to answer the question: do digital games and simulation help students studying science, technology, math, and engineering achieve better learning outcomes?
Beth Dichter's insight:

To what extend do digital games boost students' test scores in STEM? According to the preliminary data released by SRI "students at the median in the control group (no games) could have been raised 12 percent in cognitive learning outcomes if they had received the digital game." (From an analysis of 77 peer-reviewed journal articles K-16 in STEM.)

And it turns out that simulations may create a larger impact.

Take a look at this post and see where gamification may be heading in the future!

The Truth About Brainstorming And The Proof About Learning

The Truth About Brainstorming And The Proof About Learning | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
From theasideblog.blogspot.com - June 17, 10:37 PM

"Brainstorming, for example, which has been practiced for decades in every boardroom and classroom across America, has been shown almost never to work. Brainstorming relies on the conceit that any idea is a good idea, and that feedback is the same as criticism which kills spontaneity. Both of these notions are completely false, and taken as the underpinnings of creativity, they yield surprisingly few and alarmingly thin suggestions in response to any group-think exercise."

Beth Dichter's insight:

So does brainstorming work? Check out the 2 minute video that looks at this issue (embedded in the post) as well as many other great resources including:

* An infographic "Move Beyond Brainstorming" that provides suggestions for more effective group work and discusses the concept of "lateral thinking".

* A second infographic "Are We Brainstorming the Wrong Way?" that looks at ways to generate ideas through interpersonal learning.

* And one final infographic from Mindjet 'Between Minds" that provides "an ongoing taxonomy of team dynamics" by comparing the left brain and right brain.

What do you feel are the key digital literacy skills that 21st century learners need?

What do you feel are the key digital literacy skills that 21st century learners need? | Learning Technology | Scoop.it
From quickshout.blogspot.co.uk - June 18, 6:31 AM

Digital literacy has become one of the major issues facing educators in this early part of the 21st century. The need to develop students and teachers digital literacies has become increasingly accepted as fact and yet most teachers' and students' understanding of what exactly constitutes a digital literacy still seems to remain quite vague. Even more vague seems to be teachers' understanding of how precisely we go about developing those literacies.

Goodbye Essay, Hello Podcast | Dialogue

Goodbye Essay, Hello Podcast | Dialogue | Learning Technology | Scoop.it
From www.ourkids.net - June 18, 5:34 AM

One of the greatest conflicts between new and old literacies is many educators’ continuing belief that students’ analytical skills are not properly developed through the use of new media. There is some justification for this: Many student-created new media works are simplistic mishmashes of audio and video clips with no thesis or rationale. New media is used more as a toy than as an educational tool. It is no wonder that many teachers, uncomfortable with new media to begin with, see it as harming student literacy.

Nik Peachey's insight:

Interesting look at the role of podcast in new literacies. has some useful practical tips.

The libertarian iCapitalists wouldn't have anything to do with the state … would they? | Guardian.co.uk

The libertarian iCapitalists wouldn't have anything to do with the state … would they? | Guardian.co.uk | Surfing the Broadband Bit Stream | Scoop.it
From www.guardian.co.uk - Today, 5:05 PM

As Google reels from stinging condemnation for its tax avoidance from Margaret Hodge's parliamentary committee, and the hi-tech companies are embarrassed by allegations of state surveillance, the general response has been one of astonished disbelief.

But we should not be surprised. The "iCapitalists" have long been zealots for a radically neoliberal vision of capitalism. It is their skill at making this harsh approach palatable to the modern zeitgeist which will probably save their skin – though with potentially disastrous consequences for our economy.

Big tech, originating in California's Silicon Valley, has always been about more than cutting-edge engineering. It embodies a value system that merges a counter-cultural 60s romantic individualism with a cold-eyed commitment to free markets. Apple's Steve Jobs, the Zen Buddhist of canny entrepreneurialism, captured the worldview with Apple's famous 1997 slogan: "Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers …"

And it is this rebellious pose that reconciled a whole swath of the educated professional classes – the "creatives" – to free-market capitalism. In the 1980s, it was besuited corporates who were in the vanguard of Thatcher's and Reagan's neoliberal revolution – people such as the hard-faced, downsizing financier Mitt Romney.

The iCapitalists, however, presented a far more appealing vision to liberals – one of denimed democracy, of gender-blind and colour-blind egalitarianism. For many of us, Google's own Big Brother house-style offices, with their Play School sofas and pool tables, seemed the very epitome of a creative, "happening" workplace; while Facebook's Silicon Valley HQ was a mini-utopia of subsidised gyms, dentists, and personal stylists.

But this is an egalitarian utopia only for the networked and highly educated, not for the many. For the iCapitalist culture is not so much liberal as libertarian, and is founded on the belief that we should be led by elite hi-tech businesses and their shinily packaged semi-conductors and microchips; the state, a lumbering, bureaucratic drag on creativity and innovation, has a minimal role.

This worldview lies behind Eric Schmidt's defending Google's tax affairs with reference to the company being "a key part of the electronic commerce expansion of Britain, which is driving a lot of economic growth for the country." It is not necessary, it seems, to worry about taxation, and indeed the state, as long as company profits are trickling down to the rest of us.
